Key ideas for White
  • Develop smoothly and castle kingside early.
  • Increase central control with c3 and d4 in many lines.
  • Use piece maneuvers (e.g. Nbd2–f1–g3) to build up pressure.

Our Trainer helps you memorize concrete move orders inside these plans.

Plans for both sides

White’s goals

White wants a healthy pawn structure, active pieces, and long-term pressure on the queenside or kingside depending on the variation. Typical plans include slow buildup, targeting Black’s queenside pawns, and exploiting space advantages.

Black’s goals

Black chooses between solid systems (like the Closed Ruy) and more active defenses. Key ideas include timely breaks with ...d5, exchanging pieces to relieve pressure, and precise defense of the kingside.
